BlackBerry KEY2 Review: 3 Reasons It's My Next Phone

The flagship BlackBerry in 2018 is a sleek, slab-sided smartphone with a design from the future – and a keyboard from the past. I say in the narration that the BlackBerry KEY2 probably won’t be your next smartphone, and based purely on buying habits in 2018 that's probably true. The thing is, it will be *my* next phone – and I’m gonna do this review a little differently by telling you the three reasons why. Join me for the MrMobile BlackBerry KEY2 Review! BlackBerry KEY2 Review

The BlackBerry KEY2 isn’t the first Android-powered BlackBerry, but it is by far the best. Its blend of style, solid performance, a fantastic physical keyboard and a long-lasting battery more than enough to win over one-time BlackBerry devotees and people who hate typing on touchscreens. That’s not exactly a huge market though, and the phone’s many strengths may not count for much to people who have thoroughly embraced their iPhones and Galaxys. BlackBerry fans are looking for a comeback — here's why the KEY2 does a 'pretty good job'.

Many grew up clacking away on their BlackBerry — it helped keep track of appointments or schedules and was a pretty popular competitor to other phone models back in the day.
Now, BlackBerry is back with a new physical keyboard phone — giving those who used to be fans of the devices something to celebrate. BlackBerry announced the BlackBerry Key2 June 7, 2018. The new smartphone comes complete with BlackBerry’s signature physical keyboard, that uses touch sensors to make typing faster.

The screen itself is only 4.5 inches and the device runs Android Oreo. It has dual rear cameras and enhanced security, using BlackBerry’s DTEK system.

“When we transitioned to Android, we made the decision to bring out an application called DTEK,” explained SVP and GM of Mobility Solutions Alex Thurber. “And one way to think about DTEK is that it is a dashboard into the security status of your phone. Kind of an ongoing view into your security posture.”

Blackberry stopped using its own OS in 2015 and stopped designing their own phones in 2016. The Key2 was designed under TCL Communication, the brand licensing partner to BlackBerry. Still, the Key2 is undeniably BlackBerry, all that’s missing is the traditional trackball.
