Ghostek Rapture vs Ghostek SoDrop 2.0 - Which set of headphones should you get?

If you’ve been watching me for a while, you know that I’m a fan of Ghostek Bluetooth headphones. I was impressed by the original SoDrop and was blown away by the SoDrop 2.0. So what do I think about the new Rapture? In short, it is a better product but if I had to chose, I’d stick with my SoDrop 2.0’s. I’ll elaborate in a bit. Get the Ghostek Rapture on Amazon! Amazon US: Amazon CA: Amazon UK: Amazon DE: Get the Ghostek SoDrop 2.0 on Amazon! Amazon US: Amazon CA: Amazon UK: Amazon DE: The Rapture is one of Ghostek’s newer headphones. And Ghostek went all out and decided to use graphene in the headphones. From my understanding, commercial use of graphene is fairly limited so Ghostek is on the forefront in that regard. In terms of design, the Rapture looks a bit more luxurious than the SoDrop 2.0. The arms of the Rapture are covered made entirely of metal whereas the SoDrop’s have a piece of metal glued to plastic. Both sets of headphones easily fold into a smaller package with the SoDrop’s fitting into a hard case and the Rapture going into a leather looking bag. The Rapture pairs much easier to my devices than my SoDrop 2.0 as I had to manually pair the SoDrop’s to every device I wanted to use with, every time. The Rapture also comes with ShareMe which I was unable to use since I didn’t have a second ShareMe compatible set of headphones. ShareMe basically allows you to daisy chain a pair of Bluetooth headphones to a single device. This sounds like a great idea but I’m not sure how prevalent it will become since Bluetooth 5.0 is said to have the ability to pair multiple headphones to a single device. The biggest difference between the SoDrop 2.0 and Rapture headphones is the fit of the ear cups. The Rapture is an on-ear pair of headphones while the SoDrop 2.0’s are over the ear. This difference is why I would gravitate to the SoDrop 2.0’s over the Rapture. I can actually wear the SoDrop 2.0’s for hours at a time without having my glasses hurt my ears. I can go at most an hour with the Rapture and this become very frustrating over time. SOUND QUALITY Right out of the box, my family and myself preferred the SoDrop’s. I asked everybody to listen to their favourite songs on a SoDrop paired with an iPhone 8 Plus and the Rapture on the iPhone X. They would bounce from headphones and headphones and everybody chose the SoDrop’s over the Rapture. When I asked them why they liked it, they said the white headphones sounded fuller. My guess is that sound reverberates better with the over ear cups than the on ear cups. The heavier base on the SoDrop’s also add to that fullness it seem. So when is the Rapture better than the SoDrop’s? You’re going to love the Rapture if you’re very particular about what your music sounds like. I like to listen to a lot of dubstep so the heavy base of the SoDrop 2.0’s works well for my listening taste. BUT I also listen to a lot of acoustic music and after spending a lot of time between the two headphones, the Rapture does sound better. But at the end of the day, Is it worth the extra 30 dollars? I’d say so. Why? Because you can really fine tune what your music sounds like. And it makes a big difference if you take the time to play around with the equalizer on your smartphone or laptop. I’ve been on a kick re-discovering old favourites because they sound slightly different. For example, listening to Smith & Myers sing Nothing Else Matters using the acoustic setting with the Rapture is mind-blowing because it sounds like I’m right beside the guitar. The same song doesn’t sound bad with the SoDrop’s but the extra bass takes away from the higher registers of the song. But this won’t matter if all you listen to is bass-heavy music. If that’s you, go with the SoDrop 2.0’s. With all that being said, being unable to use it for more than an hour at a time is a deal breaker for me. Going back to my spices example, it’s like getting indigestion every time I use anything other than salt and pepper. Which is why I still prefer the SoDrop 2.0’s. If Ghostek would put graphene speakers in the SoDrop, I’d be incredibly happy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to stay in the loop!
