English Lesson: "To Me" vs "For Me"

Do you know the difference between using "to me" and "for me"? It's not always easy, which makes for an understandable mix-up. But if you want to sound like a native speaker, you have to make sure you don't confuse the two. In this English lesson, learn how to differentiate them. Remember, we're less focused on the reasoning of the grammar. Pay attention to how it sounds. Jon Dao - The Conversation Coach www.commdao.com

How to use "used to" in English

In the English language, we use the phrase used to to describe something that we did in the past but that we do not do anymore. We can use this phrase to talk about past hobbies, jobs or even just habits that we have since left behind or replaced with new ones. For example, a former police officer might say, "I used to be a police officer before I retired." Someone who took regular nightly walks might say, "I used to walk down by the river as the sun was setting." We can also use it to talk about realities that used to be relevant but have since ceased to be realities. For example, imagine someone is returning home to their old neighborhood, which has changed a lot since they have been there. They might say, "There used to be a building there" or "That’s where the old bridge used to be." Forming used to phrases: Used to phrases are formed, in the affirmative, as follows: Subject + used to + verb My mom + used to + dance competitively. My mom used to dance competitively. In this situation, the speaker is conveying that, in the past, their mom was a competitive dancer for a time, but has since stopped dancing competitively. Examples: • My dad used to work for the State in the 1980′s. • We used to all play basketball in the park together after school. • My grandparents used to go on a date to the movies every Friday night when they were young. • I used to read more books for leisure back when I was in high school. Used to phrases are formed, in the negative, as follows: Subject + didn’t + use to + verb We + didn’t + use to + get up so early. We didn’t use to get up so early. In this situation, the speaker is conveying that, in the past, they (the speaker plus whoever they include within the group implied by the plural subject pronoun we) did not rise at such an early time in the morning and would in fact sleep later into the day than they do now. Examples: • She didn’t use to ride as much as she does now. • We didn’t use to go to the park as often as we do now. • They didn’t use to enjoy one another’s company like they do now. • I didn’t use to be as productive as I am these days. • This town didn’t use to have as many stoplights as it does now. Used to phrases are formed, in the interrogative, as follows: Did + subject + use to + verb Did + he + use to + have long hair? Did he used to have long hair before he went bald? Examples: • Did there use to be a cinema where they supermarket now is? • Did John use to go clubbing much before he got married? • Did we use to have a blue car or a red one? • Did you use to play any sports? • Did Sarah and Chelsea use to live together? Note: In negative and interrogative sentences, the -d is removed from used to to make just use to. The reason for this is simply because it makes pronouncing the words easier.

TEFL or Teaching English as a Foreign Language is an ever more popular way to travel abroad. TEFL (also known as TESOL) affords the opportunity to earn a living while traveling which really helps to lessen the costs of that which was has become, for most, a required but more and more expensive desire. The advantage with TEFL instead of other career and travel options abroad is the immediate opportunity instructors have to immerse themselves in new civilizations, generally what most want of their experience abroad but often difficult to obtain. As an English teacher you'll be a respected area of the local community. Because of this, windows of social opportunities within new civilizations, often shut down to outsiders, will continually open to you. In addition, and probably best of all, TEFL supplies the opportunity to help and enrich the lives of others through education.

English languge is quickly becoming the globe terminology of communication. As the necessity to learn English rises as does the need for teachers to teach this language. In times past the simple need to teach English as a foreign language was that the applicant be a indigenous or fluent English speaker, no skills required. As the demand for instructors has increased, most companies now require applicants to own formal skills. Generally, the type of qualifications required, reflect the financial position of the united states. For example, companies in Japan or Italy require that applicants have a diploma in any field and are TEFL certified, while companies in say Cambodia or Chile only require applicants to be TEFL certified.

There are a number of TEFL training companies to choose from, some good and some not so good. When choosing a TEFL course provider you should ascertain whether the provider is approved by an external examining body, if it is then the course and certification granted will be acknowledged and accepted internationally.

Determine if the course provides coaching practice with genuine students of English and that the coaching English as a foreign language course itself will involve at least 100hrs of training. Other criteria to consider is the course materials, content of the course and course framework.

Once you have chosen a TEFL course provider the application procedure is rather simple and quick. The only real criteria if you are eligible to undertake a TEFL course being that the applicant is a indigenous or near indigenous English loudspeaker. Post application, often a deposit repayment is a need to secure a location on a course with the balance of course fees being payable at the beginning of the course itself.

TEFL: Teaching English as a SPANISH, once the bastion of groovy back again packers with a quest, is currently the stable course for graduates dearly looking for life and travel experience, for those unhappy with the politicians and environment of their home country and needing to start again in a new location clear of all the nonsense, for retirees wanting to make amends for an operating life that was a necessity rather than choice as well as for those unhappy with their jobs and needing a new obstacle in a job that gives back a lot more than a salary.
